So far, I’ve written three Sci-Fi/Horror scripts including “Femme Fatale in Stiletto Heels” (Science of Cryogenics combined with fear of growing old and unattractive); “Devil’s Ride” (Science of DNA regeneration combined with fear of going to Hell); and “Bestie” (Environmental Science combined with fear of loss of a loved one). I am now working on a new project, “A.I. Spider” which combines fear of Computer Science with a focus on A. I. with a fear of spiders. This article helped me clarify how to explain my stories living in this “sub-genre sandpit”. Thank you very much for this article!

Comment on How Do You Write a Cinematic Two Hander? The Godfather II has 114 characters and The Departed has 156 characters which are numbers way bigger than the usually 2 characters in a two hander movies. You could add 3 or 4 extra very minor characters in a two hander movie as long as they remain unimportant or their scenes could be erased without affecting the core of the film. The 2 main characters in a two hander must drive the action and usually most conflicts should be originated in the calsh of their respective personalities.
The Godfather II and The Departed two main characters almost do not share together the screen but instead their stories are told in parallel with almost no effect to each other during most of the film (or at all in the Godfather II)

I’ve reviewed a number of screenplays and there seems to be an inconsistency with the use of TITLE or (TITLE CARD) vs SUPER when inserting text over the film image. TITLE or TITLE CARD seems (based on some screenplays I’ve seen) indicate the text will appear over a black screen. I’ve seen SUPER used to indicate the text is seen or superimposed over the film image. Please help explain the difference.

Your car needs new tires a tire shop will put new tires on. If your carpets are dirty a carpet cleaner will clean them . Go to a restaurant and order a meal they’ll cook it up and bring it to your table. With the film industry it’s much different. Write a script in the form of “Treasure Sierra Madrid” by the time it climbs the ladder of agents, managers, actors, executives, directors, producers, script writers, and all the Hollywood politics, it comes back to you titled, “Rumpelstiltskin and the Six Dwarfs”. Then you read it and don’t recognize a word you’ve written, not even the title, but they’ll say to you, “See, now that’s a script.”

I will generally do this in the context of writing about them alongside superheroes, usually as villains and obstacles the hero(es) must face. What I would love to do is to be able to write creatures and monsters in their own stories, whether the genre is horror or sci-fi/horror. I would like to try my hand at turning one of my monstrous characters into a possible movie script.
Thanks for listening!

I know compressing a whole story into a sentence is very difficult but what I did like is how relieved I felt knowing I don’t have to complicate things to write a simple logline and I probably already have a few good ones in my longer pitches and promo docs, which I will dig up or just write a new one. Thanks for the help.

But one of the most influential villains of all time, for me, is Harry Powell, played by Robert Mitchum in Night of the Hunter from 1955. A truly evil character, this is one of Mitchum’s best roles as the religious fanatic serial killer preying on the weak to satisfy his greed and desires.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think the femme fatale is more often a tragic character. Usually the rich client and the world of power they represent is the true antagonist (though they’re usually let go because their “punishment” of losing someone important due to their own greed has already happened to serve as the basis and eventual reveal of the plot – and also to reinforce that the world’s corruptness, the reason for the hero’s cynicism, can not be truly defeated.) The femme fatale and their self-destructiveness is presented as a victim of the same
“Under The Skin” isn’t even a noir, what the heck? It is however, an excellent satire/sci-fi/(feminist film?) that I often recommend to people. Same goes for Ex Machina. But you can’t shove it into the noir genre just because it has a woman killer or a woman who’s exploited. Those themes are more universal than the unreliable vamp and what they represent.
Admittedly I’ve not seen every movie on your list, I’m basing it on Raymond Chandler novels (who we should consider being the “creator” of the noir genre) and other authors after him. So this could be a fair criticism of post WWII cinema, but I think it’s wrong to equate that with the noir genre as a whole.

adding in that Luke had in-movie tragedy – Luke is too late to save his family; he watches his mentor die, can do nothing. He responds to this by deciding to join Ben, not single-handedly save everyone. His father is terrible, this gets a substantive reveal, he gets most of a movie to grow from it. Rey is 90% power. Unfortunately for Daisy Ridley, Rey gets little time to develop as a character – good thing she doesn’t need it! Ms. Ridley did a very good job with very little to work with.

Thank you so much for your warm, thoughtful, and incisive interview.
Your honesty and your values come across loud and clear.

I’m writing to you because I cannot find a clear, comprehensive answer to a very simple and important question or two about the Titan Awards. I trust that you too have asked these very same questions yourself, prior to your signing on to judge the contest.

How many screenplays that have done well in the Titan Awards have ever actually sold? How many Titan Award contestants have had their scripts successfully produced?

Given the number of winners in the past, approximately what percentage of those outstanding and award winning scripts have then afterwards made it through the maze, been sold, and have then been made into successful film and television shows?

And of those scripts, however few or many, that have truly scaled the castle wall, do you have any personal favorites that have led you to want to lay your name on the line in your decision to judge this contest?

You’re busy, I know, and time is always short for all of us: but the nature of your interview, and the crystal clear impression you leave in this interview as to your character and your core values have given me the faith and the courage to write to you personally.

My hope is that I’ve not been rude in doing so.

Thank you so much again for your thoughtful interview, and for your valuable time.

Sincerely,

Bruce Van Noy

Comment on What is a Mary Sue Character And How Do You Avoid Writing One? by Stefan Di Iorio https://industrialscripts.com/mary-sue-character/#comment-903209 Sat, 29 Apr 2023 14:04:27 +0000 https://industrialscripts.com/?p=239764#comment-903209 “Even so, Rey’s journey generally follows a fairly similar trajectory to Luke Skywalker’s. If she is a Sue, she is no more one than he is.”

You have no idea what you’re talking about. Rey is the quintessential Mary Sue to the point of redefining the term. Luke had to train. Nearly died multiple times. Lost a hand. Was too naive and that has consequences. Rey? Solves every problem on her immediate second try. Everyone likes her. Is naturally good. Overpowers a practiced Sith Warrior with a weapon she’s never trained or used before. Uses force persuasion, instantly, without any training. Can speak Droid and Wookie, without trading. Instant amazing pilot. Instant amazing sharpshooter. Somehow has a magical connection to a lightsaber that has nothing to do with her. Gets the millennium falcon…

That’s just the first movie.

Via script.
What are the options with regards to condensing the storyline to fit a 90 to 120 minute format.
If indeed that requires omitting pertinent scenes and info which accurately tell the course of events
and deem to be integral to the storylines flow and introduction of
Golden insights into the forward motion of the plot.
How can you cookie cutter it .
Or what are the other options if the scripts natural length is beyond the modern movie format
Should it be considered for a series or something of that nature.

Sorkin is great for writing the genius who rattles off facts and statistics, and makes great movies in that genre – like The Social Network. But when he goes outside that genre it doesn’t work, like Studio 60. He couldn’t do comedy, he’s a serious guy whose strength is intellectual dialogue with every character a genius.

Diablo Cody imo hasn’t done that well since Juno because her strength is quirky, quippy dialogue, with every character having a perfect comeback. Which works for heartwarming movies like Juno. But Jennifer’s Body was a mess because it’s too dark a story for the comedic dialogue. About 100 people die in it, the main character kills her best friend, then in max-security prison is still speaking in one-liners! The tone is jarring.

Writers usually do best in a niche.

I won’t comment on shows I haven’t seen. However, I have seen Twilight and I didn’t care for it at all. The reasons why are vast, but concentrating on character. Bella is one of those perfect teen girls from high school everyone, except me, liked or pretended to like for no reason other than popularity that she didn’t deserve. I made the mistake of reading all four books before seeing a movie. I don’t recommend them. I thought maybe the flaw of the Bella character was the writing, itself. Those books were not well written, not even average writing. Poorly written. The writer shows little skill and I wondered how she managed to land a contract. I felt the same about 50 Shades of Grey. I believed the characters suffered because of poor writing skills. They could almost have been written by the same teenager. I did see that Star WArs movie. Rey was okay, a little dull and too quiet, but nothing horrible. I began to lose interest when Han Solo was killed by his own son…that was evil. I haven’t seen another movie since so I did not see her second defeat of Ren. I expected a revelation that they were brother and sister. Would I call Rey a Mary Sue? I don’t know, dull? Yes, flawed, maybe, perfect? Never. She is far from charming, is not friendly to everyone, in fact, I gather she really doesn’t like people. But I only saw the one movie, and only once. I could be remembering it wrong.

I walked into the student union where “Citizen Kane” was just about to start. I’d never heard of it, but I knew who Welles was from his radio work. So, I though I’d watch a bit of the film, never expecting to stay. I was immediately sucked into the plot. The Bernard Herrmann score, the photography, the cast — particularly Welles — worked together like a precision machine. And I would agree the plot twist is one of the two greatest movie endings — the other being Rod Serling’s Statue of Liberty reveal at the conclusion of “Plant of the Apes.” This was Robert Wise’s first editing project and when he transitioned to directing, you can see the influence of “Citizen Kane,” Particularly on “The Day the Earth Stood Still,” which also had a Herrmann score.

You are doing it wrong.

The agents did not even open that, much less read it.

Do not send your script to anyone unless they ask for it. If you send it without them asking they are obligated to throw it in the trash unread.

The right way is to send a query with the logline and politely ask them if they want to read your script.

Even better, send the query to a manager first – not an agent. An agent comes later. You need a manager first.

Hollywood has rules and a process. Its not about manners. Its a business about making money.

Probably true. But I just published a short murder mystery story, in which an artist, obsessed with making jewelry, kills the person who stole some. I only realized after I wrote it and it was accepted for publication that it was a variation on the “Mad Scientist” trope, because I had described his workshop in detail and referred to his disconnection from anything but his work a few times. They are tropes because they are real….

It really was a very useful article. Not sure I have the patience for 100 hrs more but you do know your stuff! Is there a danger that the script could get too formulaic if we follow your advice? Film scripts nowadays seem to flit from present to past in quite a confusing way. Should one follow this and other modern trends? Is it compulsory to confuse as contemporary scriptwriters seem to deliberately make plots opaque/obtuse etc eg Man in the High Castle.

You have missed the important aspects of the movie and you just boiled down the character into some “toxic”, “terroristic”, and “shallow” image, which is masqueraded as the “savior” of the society. Your philosophical standpoint is missing. You totally misunderstood the figurative way of depicting the character who, displaying strong value structures, wants to show us that life is to be lived. His stance on material possessions, fear, vegetative life, courage, human capability… where is your opinion about that? This article is misleading.

But if you think she followed the path of Luke Skywalker you’re delusional. Rey was a Jedi Master from minute one, and she defeated Kylo Ren TWICE in her debut movie. 2-0 right out of the gate and she didn’t even know how to use the force. it was all just raw talent. What did she ever overcome in those films? she found out her bloodline in the end. not really an obstacle. Meanwhile, Luke started out as a failure with the force, didn’t have the temperment for it, plus his family was slaughtered. Do i need to go on? Luke and Rey are the OPPOSITE not the same.

#2. Captain Marvel is not the same thing as Tony Stark NOT EVEN CLOSE. Stark is more flaws than perfections. He broke most relationships, is an alcoholic, his arrogance literally got him into trouble and almost got people killed, and his flaws is what created the entire PLOT of Iron Man 1 and what allowed the Seven Rings and Obadiah to do what they did. Meanwhile Marvel was incredibly cocky from the start but excelled at everything from the start. And then she becomes the most powerful being in the universe on top of that? It takes a special kind of actor to pull off being likable under those circumstances and Brie Larsen ain’t it. Captain Marvel is extremely unlikable.

And i never thought of Bella, but yeah, everyone stumbling all over to be her friend and lover with no real compelling reason why. And then she becomes the most powerful vampire on Earth with zero explanation why her. Total Mary Sue.

It’s never easy. Even so, this is a great guide for those just starting out. Above all else you will need good health and fitness, physical, mental and creative energy, determination, application, dedication, self-confidence and social skills, in order to make any kind of career.
Above all, don’t give up, so you may end up with some satisfying degree of success, even a brief moment of immortality, if not a full career.
Remember the Italian gentleman who wrote one novel in his life before he died. He never gave up. A number of publishers turned it down, but it was eventually published posthumously. It became an instant classic and, a few years later, a classic movie, Il Gattopardo (The Leopard) starring Burt Lancaster.
Success comes to those who don’t give up.

I think it’s important to add that the show also make sit pretty clear that people around Walt constantly underestimating him, his own family especially, are at least partially responsible for the creation of Heisenberg. Of course they don’t deserve all the responsibility; he can choose a different path at any given time. We all can. I think that’s what Better Call Saul shows as a contrast to BB… and I’ll leave it at that to avoid spoilers. There are a few times where characters in BCS go the other way when given a choice… the characters in BB do not.

However… there are many, many moments early on in BB where one less joke at Walt’s expense… one more pat on the back… one gesture of genuine appreciation for his intelligence and what he does as a teacher and a father might have caused Walt to choose a different path. There’s an accumulation of humiliation and defeat at play that isn’t meant to be ignored.

In Season 1, maybe even the pilot, Skyler asks Walt what he plans on doing over the weekend… he talks about visiting a new museum in Los Alamos. He’s sharing what he still cares about, is great at, and understands: science. And she doesn’t care. She wants him to paint the baby’s room. Is she wrong? No… but the look of disappointment and feeling cut down for sharing what he cares about, that lack of connection on Walt’s face? That happens over and over and over again in the early going. He’s treated like a piece of furniture at home and at work and then he faces an existential crisis he doesn’t even feel comfortable sharing. He begins to see through the very thin veil of b.s. that props up daily life. Transgressions like smoking pot, that his wife blows out of proportion (and seem even more ridiculous with the years that have passed), are seen to him as trivialities in the game of life and death.

Then it’s Hank at Walt’s birthday party and the jokes at his expense; seeing Hank connect better with his own son who Walt, Jr., quite clearly sees as a better father figure than Walt. Why? Cause Hank is a man who knows his way around guns and danger.

There’s a stronger undercurrent early on in the show that indicts dog-eat-dog capitalism, the war on drugs, and toxic masculinity as elements in the match that ignite Heisenberg just as much as his own ego or pride do. Walt doesn’t exist in a vacuum. He’s at least partially a result of his environment and the isolation he feels at home and at work. Remember, the main premise of Mr. Rogers needing to sell meth and become Tony Montana TO PAY HIS MEDICAL BILLS does not work in the majority of the world. It’s an almost uniquely AMERICAN tragedy. So there’s elements of toxic masculinity, ego, capitalism, and the feeling that we’re all in a zero sum game but just don’t realize it… they all play into Walt becoming “the one who knocks”.

At a certain point, Walt’s ego has taken control of his actions and this moment seems to be it. It’s the point of no return for him. He even appears to shrink back into being the sheepish old “Walt” at the very last moment as the realization about what he’s just done hits him: he’s lifted the curtain and revealed Heisenberg to one of the few people who still genuinely care about his well-being. And there’s no going back. She will never see plain old “Walt” again.

I’ve always felt that Walt’s ego and need for external validation are undeniably the cause for his demise and the path of destruction he leaves behind. But I also think there’s something to be said for Walt as a mirror to the toxicity in the society around him. Nobody wants to look in that mirror; they prefer to live in the delusion and enjoy their own lack of awareness. Ignorance is bliss, but that’s exactly what allows Walt to constantly get the better of people far more powerful than him, even a man as meticulous as Gus Fring. Walt outsmarts them all, in some way, always staying one step ahead until the very end, which even that seems planned on his part… and perhaps he stays ahead because he sees the fragility and the facade of it all.

I feel like it was not a throw-away line that when Jesse first sees Walt with the shaved head, he says he looks like Lex Luthor. Because that’s exactly what he becomes.

I agree. To me the focus in this scene is largely in how he is overstepping his family, dismissing his wife entirely as an equal. Ignoring family concerns and refusing to talk of them. He gets triggered childishly over pride and fully abandons his role as a father in this scene. He uses power over Skyler, and the disappointment is all over her face, but he ignores it and feels no shame.

He has a life of his own now that is independent of any concerns his wife might have. He is practically leaving his family. Yet he doesn’t see it, because he is blind to his own addiction to power. He is risking his family. Skyler had already filed a divorce, but he kept going. He had a place and a value as a father that could have been enough for his life’s fulfilment and self esteem, but it wasn’t. Skyler sees this. He doesn’t.

Through the series Skyler is constantly there, a piece that doesn’t match the game, an annoyance, a hindrance, past life still present, the wife he married for life but who is now in the way of Heisenberg. It is easy forget he has a baby and a teenager at home, as they fade away from Walter’s life.

When the camera leaves Skyler, Walter leaves her too and gets consumed by his alter ego. It’s all about him now. Him and his game.

As we see in flashbacks, Gus doesn’t have an immediate family, and his love was murdered. So does he really believe this, or does he just know saying it will get Walt to do what he wants. Who would Gus consider family? His employees? Mike? So many layers!

He tells Walter White that like himself, Gus “hides in plain sight”. He schmoozes with and makes generous financial contributions to his greatest, most dangerous opponent: the law-enforcement community. It’s the old “keep your friends close but your enemies closer”. The most dangerous foe is the one you least suspect to be your opponent. Kudos to Gilligan and Esposito for creating a truly riveting villain!

Luke wanted to be important, to matter, and to leave. When his Aunt and Uncle die, it is so iconic that the hope begins with devastation. His whole life is blown up and he is free.

Comment on What is Magical Realism? It would have used magical realism when treating the stories (legends) people told about her. All the production companies loved it, but at the end of the day the rights to her life were a mess divided in three different parties, so it couldn´t be done by my team. I did shoot a short proof of concept to show them what magical realism was like:

Comment on How to BEGIN Writing a Fantasy Script: 7 Great Ways into the Fantasy Genre by Stian https://industrialscripts.com/fantasy-genre/#comment-901098 Sun, 24 Jul 2022 10:07:02 +0000 https://industrialscripts.com/?p=231790#comment-901098 I found this article very enjoyable! I love studying opinions on how to plan and develop fantasy stories — especially pertaining to visual storytelling.

I really appreciate the attention that was given to the development of villains. All too often, fantasy villains feel rather flat, which leaves the story without any “philosophical depth.”

Even if there is a hero character I can have empathy for, these stories don’t really satisfy me… I find that I have a longing for something else than “action and adventure” by itself when consuming stories in the fantasy genre. Something of greater substance…

… This desire is an important motivational factor for me in developing my own fantasy franchise: a story where the characters come first — their emotional vulnerability and their philosophical reasoning — and where the action is second — where the “cool magic powers” and exciting turns of battle are given greater significance by the firstly established philosophical conflict.

In terms of movies, I think the Dark Knight trilogy is closest thematically to what I have in mind. But I’m proud to say that I’m mainly inspired by Japanese role-playing games and anime — some of which have a character depth I wish I’d see more of in movies.

… I really hope that fantasy movies of the future will feature greater emotional and philosophical depth to the characters involved — be they heroes, villains or side characters. I believe the movie format has amazing potential for deep and exciting fantasy stories!

I’d like to add Jordan Peele’s impressive film “Get Out” as an excellent example of the magic realism genre as well. It focuses on the social aspect of liberal racism in such horrendous fashion. It put Mr. Peele on the map as a filmmaker and storyteller of value, who pushes boundaries and used the genre to do it.

I am no fan of “gritty realism” at all…no do i wish to churn out glorified soap opera about “issue based” subjects…I believe the development of modern technology has made possible incredible imaginative productions and scripts, but the response to this has been negligable. Only very rarely does tv drama ever get close to what it can, or should achieve…it seems unless a television writer is prepared to jump through several hoops regarding the “validity ” of his work or the “relevance ” of it to the viewer, then the idea will be rejected…id love to be able to see a time as we had in the 60s and 70s when directors and writers were prepared to take chances…remember PENDAS FEN…? remember ARTEMIS 81? remember GORMENGHAST?? … these were all outstanding…towering above any number of the dull dramas the schedules are choked with these days… im sure im not the only aspiring writer who thinks along these lines.. at least i hope im not…

One thing about inciting incident and showing a prior boring past, in Oedipus, Aristotle’s example of a perfect play, there is no boring past. The play opens in chaos and Oedipus is already on the path to uncovering the mystery.
It’s not that Sophocles doesn’t know the convention, he just chooses to cut to the chase and Aristotle is fine with that. It allows Sophocles to get to the second act very fast. At about 10% into the play.
I think this is possible, coz the play is for adults. They don’t need all the careful set up.
Movies for all ages need to follow all the beats described here. I’m not sure anything PG-13 and above does.

Here are a few of my faves that did not make your list.

When Somebody Loved Me from Toy Story 2. Here we learn the backstory of Jessie that explains her motivations for the whole film. Tremendous original song that got robbed of the Oscar.

Ain’t no Sunshine from Notting Hill. What could have been a conventional time passage montage, instead uses a single shot and background characters to show 6 months pass, and has some character development thrown in the background as well.

What a Wonderful World in Goodmorning Vietnam. The juxtaposition of an insanely funny DJ playing a serenely beautiful song over the visuals of the horrors ow war summarizes the whole film in a nutshell.

Along with beautiful music. Perfection.

The streets there are probably just as mean, but you’d need to throw in a joke line like, “Where are you from? “Boston.” “NOT ‘the mean streets of Detroit’?” “Man, the streets I grew up on were mean, and I’ll put ’em up against any streets in Detroit! Lemme take you there sometime,,,”. And there needs to be a particular reason that we have him as coming from Boston, because, as we ALL know, black people in movies don’t come from Boston– just in real life.

He’s waiting for me to rescue him.” “My horse is going to die.”

It covers a multitude of (mostly famous) episodes throughout the ages, criticising the nonsense of religion. Most are comedic with others serious.

Having sent it to some agents I have received no replies: do these people have any manners? It seems that unsolicited writers have zero chance. Even Charlie Dickens would have a problem nowadays.

I’m convinced that if Shakespeare came back today and tried to send “Hamlet” to any of these bad-mannered agents it would end up binned and old Will wouldn’t get an acknowledgement.

I’m currently having written a few things myself. I’m currently working on a TV show starring Lauren London as the lead character. She portraits a mother of two [Mia’s 10 & Brandon 7] with some wild family situations with her sister Charlie. Kara Winters [played by Lauren London] is a fashion buyer for one of the fifth largest retail chains in the county. Morgan’s Department Store.
With a co-worker named Brie Walker, who’s also a fashion buyer for the men’s clothing. Both Kara & Brie are close. with her ex-Carlos. Who’s now married to his new wife Keshia.

The Lauren London Show is a barrel of laughs, fun and joyfulness. That will have not only her fans excited. As bringing back some family values that are very needed in today’s society. This half hour and sometimes full hours of certain situations. The Lauren London Show is just that. A new breath of family comedy for all to enjoy and see.

Basically, every one lives in LA today. Even Tororo my small Uganda Town is part of LA even though in Africa its self, its not that well known, which is an advantage to me because this gives me a peculiar but rich, not very known setting to write about. But, like the article said, one needs net working.

Beth’s relationship with D.L.Townes was not only a teenage crush. And yes, he have a sort of crush on her but in so doing he unintentionally destroyed her young girl innocence. If you’ll recall he invited her up to his room for an impromptu photo session. It was then that she learned that, after meeting his male companion, Townes was gay. This had a huge effect on Beth and it wasn’t settled until they met again during the adjournment of her game with Borgov.

Unless you possess a personal fortune or financial support the newcomer will need to work. And a part time job at Jack in the Box isn’t going to cut it. And if you’re a foreigner it’s technically not even possible.

I moved to LA from Canada 40 years ago to write. I worked under the table and my income barely got to the point I could get a decent apartment, forget a car. You can get around LA these days by public transit, but if you need to be able to take meetings at a moments notice you’ll be spending a fortune on Ubers.

There are reasons there are thousands of homeless people in the city.

As I understand it, the main reason someone would need to be in LA is to work on a TV series in a writing room.

Personally, I wish it was possible for me to return to LA. I truly loved the city. But it’s not realistic. It’s not going to stop me from writing or trying to connect.

This is a fantastic article. A couple things to note:

1) Freddy (A Nightmare on Elm Street) wasn’t a victim of bullying. He was a child murderer (and it’s hinted that he also molested them, but not explicitly said in the first film) who was released on a technicality, so the adults in the neighborhood where he took the children from killed him. I mean…maybe that constitutes as bullying, but dude’s no victim.

2) I Know What You Did Last Summer doesn’t take place in California. It’s set in Southport, North Carolina.

The Internet brims with folks sounding off their opinions with no basis in fact or supporting evidence. So why should this site be any different. At least the anonymous “me” who claims this is “an ad really” kept it short.

I’ve used WriterDuet and its lesser-known stand-alone app WriterSolo (not mentioned here). Both are worth trying and both can be used comprehesively without having to pay anything to its creators.

If anything, the write-up WriterDuet gets on this page is understated.

To answer the other question about “protection from theft”, both apps provide for PDF passwording and watermarking. The real question is, though, are you writing scripts worth stealing?

Comment on Do You Still Need to Move to LA as a Screenwriter? by Industrial Scripts https://industrialscripts.com/move-to-la/#comment-898747 Thu, 06 Jan 2022 09:11:54 +0000 https://industrialscripts.com/?p=235328#comment-898747 In reply to Melissa Price.

Great point Melissa. As others have commented on Facebook, LA is also an outrageously expensive place to live. Financing a car, continuously, with all the bolt-on expenses associated, for example, is a must. The problem for a lot of people then becomes financing simply “existing” in LA. This then in turn erodes writing time and energy. The wisdom seems to be that you need all your ducks in a row for it to be worth it.

I had concluded, like you, that living in LA might make things easier. It “might.” However, with the brutality of Covid, the likelihood of in-person networking is slim, especially if a writer is as yet unknown. People are not likely to take in-person meetings unless they ALREADY know someone, and even then it’s a crap shoot. And with platforms like Zoom, online seems the likely choice in order to know whether an in-person meeting is warranted.

This time it’s Dorfmann’s face as he realizes what they think of him.

All the agents and executives and producers we talk to cite the writer’s inability to properly identify which of their ideas have legs, and which really don’t, as the #1 underestimated screenwriting skill.

Or, put another way, you could even hire Aaron Sorkin on a weak logline and he’d still struggle to convert it into an effective script.

Even though an ”UNKNOWN”screenwriter can have a perfectly constructed LOGLINE, I truly believe that the one element that it should have to give any chance that of your screenplay will be read, is that the LOGLINE must be presented to the reader with the one most important element that the LOGLINE must have and that is the IDEA or CONCEPT must be UNIQUE.
Most sincerely Glen.

“Dye” is the stuff used to color stuff. It is not normally thrown.
