Can unique formatting choices enhance a script’s storytelling impact, or is adherence to industry norms crucial for industry acceptance?

I’ve reviewed a number of screenplays and there seems to be an inconsistency with the use of TITLE or (TITLE CARD) vs SUPER when inserting text over the film image. TITLE or TITLE CARD seems (based on some screenplays I’ve seen) indicate the text will appear over a black screen. I’ve seen SUPER used to indicate the text is seen or superimposed over the film image. Please help explain the difference.
