Making characters sound different is hard, and something neither Sorkin nor Diablo Cody do well. Sorkin is great for writing the genius who rattles off facts and statistics, and makes great movies in that genre – like The Social Network. But when he goes outside that genre it doesn’t work, like Studio 60. He couldn’t do comedy, he’s a serious guy whose strength is intellectual dialogue with every character a genius.

Diablo Cody imo hasn’t done that well since Juno because her strength is quirky, quippy dialogue, with every character having a perfect comeback. Which works for heartwarming movies like Juno. But Jennifer’s Body was a mess because it’s too dark a story for the comedic dialogue. About 100 people die in it, the main character kills her best friend, then in max-security prison is still speaking in one-liners! The tone is jarring.

Writers usually do best in a niche.
